The EL6283CU laser driver enables up to 20 times R/W speeds; pin-compatible upgrade with existing EL6273CU
MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 1, 2000-- Elantec Semiconductor, Inc., a leader in high-performance analog ICs, today announced the first product in a new higher speed laser driver family that will enable higher CD read/write (R/W) speeds in the high growth CD-R/W optical disk drive market.
The new EL6283CU is pin-compatible with Elantec's EL6273CU driver and integrates the laser power amplifier to reduce cost and board space, thus enabling compact optical drive designs. The EL6283CU is compatible with all industry-standard functions for the CD-R and the CD-R/W optical disk markets. It is the first product in Elantec's new family of laser drivers designed to enable higher write speeds up to 20X R/W.
The EL6283CU integrates the Automatic Power Control (APC) amplifier with the three current channels needed for the read, erase, and write laser drive power levels. These laser power levels are compliant with the Orange Specification Standard for CD-R and CD-R/W write strategy formats. It also integrates the High Frequency Modulator (HFM) oscillator and a power output driver in addition to the APC. This level of integration reduces component count to save costs in addition to reducing signal routing to save design time and space, thus enabling compact Optical Pick-up Unit (OPU) design.
Steve Sacarisen, Director of Strategic Marketing, Optical Products Group, said, ``The EL6283CU laser driver offers a cost effective solution for higher read/write (R/W) 'X' speeds demanded by the PC and Consumer CD-R/W drive markets. The EL6283CU is pin-to-pin compatible with our EL6273CU, thus enabling cost effective and quick time-to-market upgrades to higher speed R/W drives. The EL6283CU features directly translate to benefits for the OEM in that it provides an easy path for 'X' speed upgrades to existing designs thereby extending the product lifecycle.''
Pricing for the EL6283CU is $2.50 in 10k quantities. The EL6283CU is sampling now in the 16-pin QSOP package with production lead times of 8-10 weeks.
