| Imation
recently entered to CD-Writer market with three quality drives. Until now they mainly manufactured almost any kind of CD, Tape & Disk media available.
The three new Imation CD-Writers are:
- Imation CD-R Super Recorder 8x20
- Model: IMR080020IS / IMR080020ES
- This drive is using the Plextor PX-R820
drive on the inside.
- Imation CD-R Super Recorder 8x2x20
- Model: IMW080220IS/IMW080220ES
- This drive is using the Plextor PX-R8220 drive on the inside.
- Imation CD-RW Super Recorder 4x4x20
- Model: IMW040420IA
- This drive is using the Ricoh MP7040

Quality CD-R80 Media

It has taken a very long time but at last an A-Brand CD-R manufacturer has committed itself to create quality 80 minutes CD-R's. Until now only lower quality CD-R80 media was made by Ritek, Xcitek,
CMC, Lead Data, Postech & Princo.
Now Taiyo Yuden has started the production of these new CD-R80 media which are currently being sold here in The Netherlands by Philips for NLG 27,50 per 5 (= US$ 14).

Enhanced CD |
| Enhanced CD (ECD) is being uses more and more lately. The Baby One More Time CD from Britney Spears is an example of an ECD. The CD contains 50 minutes of music & about 25 minutes of QuickTime clips, interviews & pictures.
An ECD always contains 2 sessions, the first session is reserved for the usual AUDIO tracks and the second session being an interactive DATA track. When the CD is started on a computer then a QuickTime (or similar package) will be started.
It all started with the Pepsi Generation X CD from TVTV$ with was released in 1995 but since then only a few ECD's were made. Since the beginning of this year this has totally been changed as more than 350 different ECD's are going to be released!

Again it is a benchmarking tool which can measure the Transfer Rate, Seek Times, CPU Usage

Pioneer launches the fastest DVD-ROM drive
|

Pioneer Multimedia is once again proving its leadership in DVD technology by launching the world's fastest DVD-ROM drive, the 10X DVD-AO4SZ. The new drive will be bundled in retail outlets throughout Europe from October with a cutting-edge package including FOX Interactive's X-Files Game and Interplay's Baldur's Gate. Both titles are DVD-ROM versions.
With market leading transfer rates of 10X for DVD-ROM (13.5 MB/s) and 40X for CD-ROM (6 MB/s), the new drive operates more than 40 per cent more efficiently than its predecessor and supports multiple disc formats including DVD-R and DVD-RW. It also comes with improved seek and access times of 90ms and 100ms for DVD-ROM and 70ms and 80ms for CD-ROM and is completed with ATAPI (DVD-AO4SZ) interface... More here.

Plextor Manager 2000
|
|
Previously we wrote that we were not able to set the Plextor CD-ROM to a slower speed but Plextor seems to move this option to the properties of the CD itself. Just right-click the CD in explorer to get to it - Thanks Dominique & JaySIN.
Also Plextor fixed the Oversize/Overburn
problem which existed in the previous Plextor Manager 96. Now DiscDupe
will asks if you want to oversize the CD-R - Thanks Glenn.

Plextor Manager 2000

CDR Info published a nice review on the recent released Plextor Manager 2000. The complete frontend has been updated and it looks much better now. The only bad thing is that the previous Plextor Manager 96 was just one tool which could be started from Task-Bar but now Plextor has split-up the manager in three separate tools:
- Audio Capture 2000
- DiscDupe 2000
- Music Video Producer 2000
All three tools can be launched from the Task-Bar but the previous option menu to set the CD-Reader to a slower speed is not included anymore! This was an option which was used alot with CD's which were hard to read at high-speed.

Adaptec acquires CeQuadrat |
| Adaptec Inc. announced that it has acquired Aachen, Germany-based CeQuadrat GmbH for approximately $25 million in cash. CeQuadrat is a privately held company with a broad range of CD-R software products sold through both OEM and retail channels.
